Of Japanese origin, this variety is a hybrid of European and Asian P. ostreatus varieties.
Featuring large meaty stems and caps, this mushroom is commonly known as Black Pearl King Oyster, for it’s resemblance to the King Oyster (P. Eryngii). This mushroom is less demanding to grow however than the Eryngii King Oyster. Â
Immature fruits resemble P. eryngii, with thick stems and small caps. As they mature, the caps enlarge and begin to more closely resemble the classic P. ostreatus morphology.
Growing on supplemented hardwood sawdust is standard practice, either supplemented with wheat bran, or on the ‘Master’s Mix’.
