An unusual species, the Shaggy Inkcap is a short-lived delicacy. With mild but excellent flavour, the mushroom should be eaten immediately after picking.
Within 24h of picking, or at maturity, the fruit body self-destructs, reducing down to an inky mess.
Found across Europe and North America, primarily in lawns, meadows, and enriched soils.
Spawn directly into manure-enriched soil. Newly laid or fertilised lawns are an ideal habitat for the coprophilous Shaggy Inkcap. Some swear by spawning on the site of a previous bonfire. They can also be spawned into 4-6 inch beds of hardwood sawdust, or manure fertilised straw.
Commercial cultivation is held back by the mushroom’s delicate constitution, short shelf-life, and uniquely messy method of self-destuction.
As the mushroom matures, the gills blacken, or “deliquesce”, transforming into a black, spore-laden fluid which drips from the rapidly receding cap margin. The cap eventually totally recedes, leaving only the stem.
Collected from a wild specimen in the UK, this strain fruits from 15-24˚c.
