Intermediate Cultivation
Shiitake Hardwood Log

Strain Profile

Shiitake is one of the most popular cultivated mushrooms in the world.  Native to Japan, Korea, and China.  Delicious and versatile, a very rewarding mushroom to cultivate.

Shiitake fruits on hardwood logs or supplemented hardwood sawdust.

Growing Shiitake outside on logs is a low-maintenance and rewarding method for the patient cultivator.  Solid logs may take 12-18 months to fruit after inoculation with plug spawn, but will then produce mushrooms seasonally for up to 5 years!

This strain fruits from 14-18Ëšc.  A Cold Weather strain, naturally fruiting in Autumn in temperate climates, it can be staggered with a Warm Weather strain such as Night Velvet (1026) which will produce in Spring/Summer.

Preferred agar culture media:  MYA, PDYA

Preferred substrate:  Hardwood Logs, Supplemented Sawdust. Particularly favours Oak and Beech.
