Phoenix Oyster

Strain Profile

The Phoenix Oyster mushroom is a species of Oyster mushroom very similar to Pleurotus Ostreatus (Pearl Oyster).  It is differentiated by its paler and smaller caps, and it develops more of a stem.  It is also commonly known as the ‘Lung Oyster’ for its lung-like cap shape (hence ‘pulmonarius’).

This species prefers warm weather, fruiting in the wild during spring/summer.  Fruiting on a wide range of substrates this species is highly adaptable and has been found fruiting on both hardwoods and conifers.

A great species for beginners, especially those living in warmer climates or wishing to grow in the summer when it would be too hot to fruit other species such as P ostreatus.

Yields can be great, and it is possible to achieve 4-5 flushes if well managed.  It is possible to acheive a Biological Efficiency of 100-200%.

If picked at full maturity, their shelf-life is short, so as with other Oysters it is best to harvest before the cap fully flattens.

Collected in Europe, this strain fruits from 18-28˚c.
