Strain Profile
The Blue Oyster mushroom is a favourite of mushrooms growers. An aggressive coloniser, it fruits prolifically on a wide range of substrates including: hardwood logs, sawdust, and straw. It is hardy and forgiving, making it an ideal species for beginners.
A native to temperate climates, this strain fruits quite happily from 7˚c upwards. Fruiting at lower temperatures is possible, and will result in slower growth but an even meatier texture and darker colouring.
Preferred agar culture media: PDA/PDYA
Preferred substrate: Hardwood, Sawdust, Pasteurised Straw
Also Known As: Pleurotus Ostreatus var. Columbinus (There is some debate on whether Blue Oysters are a distinct species or a var. of P. ostreatus.)
